Wildlife and plants of Guadeloupe

A park blending lush nature and adventure

Located on the legendary Route de la Traversée, the Guadeloupe Zoo enjoys a privileged natural setting. Far from the arid landscapes of Grande-Terre, here you immerse yourself in the cool freshness of the tropical rainforest. The entire trail has been designed to showcase this dense vegetation, creating a preserved green haven for the animals.

As you explore its 4 hectares, you discover a subtle blend of wild flora and diverse fauna, giving the park an authentic, soothing atmosphere rarely matched in the Antilles.

What kind of animal diversity can be found in the park?

It is hard not to be impressed by the richness of the collection on display. The zoo is home to approximately 85 species—a total of around 450 animals. The vast majority originate from Central and South America, creating a fascinating link to the nearby ecosystems of the Caribbean and French Guiana.

The visit holds many surprises, ranging from iconic species and elusive big cats to birds with dazzling plumage. In addition to land animals, the site offers a glimpse into the secret lives of invertebrates through its insectarium.

The forest’s star mammals

The zoo houses several species known for their vital role in the ecosystem. Some are even part of conservation programs. You can see, among others:

  • The raccoon : The park’s emblem and Guadeloupe’s mascot.
  • Big cats : Such as the majestic jaguar or the ocelot.
  • Primates : Agile spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys.
  • Small mammals : Such as mongooses and rarer species.

These animals live in spacious enclosures designed to replicate their natural habitat and promote their well-being.

Birds, reptiles, and curiosities

Bird enthusiasts will be delighted: macaws, toucans, and lorikeets captivate with their vibrant plumage. As for reptiles, pythons, Lesser Antillean iguanas(a protected species), and red-footed tortoises fascinate visitors of all ages.

Don’t miss the insectarium to discover lesser-known small wildlife: stick insects, longhorn beetles, and other invertebrates that play a crucial role in the island’s ecological balance.

A comfortable visit… up high!

Great care went into designing the trail. About 90% of the route is shaded by the canopy, allowing families to enjoy the visit sheltered from the intense sun or a passing shower. The pathways feature a non-slip surfaceand are safe for all ages.

The special touch that makes the difference? The chance to explore the park from the treetops! A network of secure suspended walkways lets you observe the forest from above, offering a unique and fun perspective that children love.

A strong commitment to biodiversity

Beyond entertainment, the Guadeloupe Zoo affirms its responsibility for species conservationIt actively collaborates with international parks and participates in seven European breeding programs to ensure the survival of endangered species.

This educational aspect raises awareness among all visitors. Educational signs line the path, reminding us that the preservation of this exceptional wildlife depends on our everyday actions.
